Mehdi Rowshannahad, a PhD student, and Stéphane Dauzère-Pérès, professor and Director of the Provence Microelectronics Center at Mines Saint-Etienne, were awarded the Best Applied Paper Prize from the Winter Simulation Conference during the 9th International Conference on Modeling and Analysis of Semiconductor Manufacturing (MASM 2013)
At the Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management Conference (IEEM 2013), Paul Pitiot, an associate researcher at Mines-Albi, received the Outstanding Paper Award for his work titled “Optimizing concurrent configuration and planning: a proposition to reduce computation time”, which he conducted in conjunction with Michel Aldanondo and Elise Vareilles, researchers at Mines-Albi, along with Thierry Coudert and Linda Zhang
Pascal Pagani, a professor in the Microwave Department at Télécom Bretagne, has been awarded the Général Ferrié Electronics Prize which goes to research that has contributed to progress in radioelectricity, electronics and their applications. Pascal Pagani won the award for this work on high-speed communications in energy networks.
Thomas Bonald, a professor in the Computer Science and Networks department at Télécom Paris, won the Blondel Medal for his work on the conception of algorithms for communication networks and on the appraisal of their performances. This prize is awarded each year to French or foreign scientists in recognition of outstanding research contributing to progress in science and the electricity and electronics industries.
Pierre Rolin from IMT has risen to the rank of Distinguished Fellow of the SEE.

The PANAMA project (Power Amplifiers and Antennae for Mobile Applications) has won the 2013 Innovation Prize during the European Nanoelectronics Forum. This prize is the highest recognition from the European Union in the field of micro- and nano-electronics. PANAMA involves the DIM and PIM teams at Télécom Bretagne, with the collaboration of Christian Person and Michel Ney as well as the C2S team of Patricia Desgreys and Patrick Loumeau from Télécom Paris.
Layal El Samarji, a PhD student, Frédéric Cuppens and Nora Cuppens-Boulahia from the Logic of Uses, Social Sciences and Information Sciences Department (Lussi), have been awarded the Best Paper Award for their paper titled “Situation Calculus and Graph Based Defensive Modeling of Simultaneous Attack” presented at the 5th edition of the international Cyberspace Safety and Security Symposium (CSS 2013).
Jean-José Orteu, a professor at Mines Albi-Carmaux and researcher at the Institut Clément Ader-Albi, has won the Jean Ebbeni Prize. The adjudicating committee was looking to reward a research partnership working in the field of optical controls and measurements and aiming to contribute to economic development. The Mines Albi-Carmaux incubator has supported numerous projects.
Delphine Bresch-Pietri, a Mines ParisTech PhD and engineer, won the 10th ParisTech Thesis Prize for her paper titled “Robust control of variable delay systems. Theoretical contributions and applications to motor control”.
Alasdair Newson, Matthieu Fradet, Patrick Perez, Andres Almansa and Yann Gousseau have been awarded a Google Best Student Paper Prize for their article “Towards fast, generic video inpainting”. Andres Almansa is a CNRS research officer and Yann Gousseau a professor at Télécom Paris.
Patrice Pajusco, professor and head of the Microwaves Department at Télécom Bretagne, has been appointed an IEEE senior member.
Xuran Zhao, a PhD student in the Multimedia Communications Department of Eurecom, has received a Best Student Paper award for his article co-authored with Nicholas Evans and Jean-Luc Dugelay, titled “Unsupervised Multi-view Dimensionality Reduction with Application to Audio-Visual Speaker Retrieval”, during the international IEEE Information Forensics and Security conference.
Fanny Frauziols, a PhD student at the Engineering and Healthcare Center of Mines Saint-Etienne, has won one of the two Poster Competition Prizes awarded during the IFRESIS day for her thesis completed in the Biological Surfaces and Tissue Engineering Department, jointly run by Stéphane Avril and Jérôme Molimard, on the theme of “Ultrasound elastography of the soft tissue of the lower limb with a view to characterizing the mechanical effects of textile medical devices”.

Bruno Vergnes, a researcher at the CEMEF (Material Forming Center) of Mines ParisTech, is the 2013 winner of the Maurice Couette Prize from the French Rheology Group (GFR). The GFR rewarded the outstanding contribution and renowned rheology research by this experienced researcher. The plenary conference given by Bruno Vergnes at the awards ceremony during the 48th GFR congress was on “Extrusion defects and polymer melt flow instabilities”.
Olivier Cappé, CNRS Research Director at the Signal and Image Processing Department of Télécom Paris, has won the Science Academy EADS Enterprise Foundation Prize, in the Information Sciences category.
Jean-François Cardoso, Research Director at the Signal and Image Processing Department of Télécom Paris, has won the Science Academy Paul Doistau-Emile Blutet Prize for Sciences of the Universe.
Gouenou Coatrieux, a researcher in the Image and Information Processing Department of Télécom Bretagne, has risen to the rank of IEEE senior member.
At the European Symposium On Pressure Equipment (ESOPE 2013), Philippe Rohart, a PhD student in the Polymers and Composites Technology & Mechanical Engineering Department of Mines Douai, has won the Best Poster Prize for his work titled “Analysis of fail modes: study and evaluation of innovative sizing methods for application to pressure equipment”.
Yehia Eissa, a PhD student in the Observation, Impacts, Energy Center at Mines ParisTech, is the winner of the Desert Energy Best Paper Award for the best scientific article published in 2013 on solar energy in desert zones, awarded by German company Dii GmbH, for her article titled “Artificial Neural Network Based Model for Retrieval of the Direct Normal, Diffuse Horizontal and Global Horizontal Irradiances Using SEVIRI Images”.
Joaquin Garcia-Alfaro, a researcher in the Telecommunications Networks and Services Department at Télécom SudParis, has achieved the rank of IEEE senior member.

Christian Person, professor in the Microwaves Department of Télécom Bretagne, has achieved the rank of IEEE senior member.
Hussein Hammoud, a PhD student at the Materials and Structures Center of Mines Saint-Etienne, has been awarded the Best Student Presentation Prize in the 14th International Conference on Microwave and High Frequency Heating (Ampere 2013), for his paper titled “Effect of the porosity on the thermo-physical properties of Cerium oxide up to 1300 K and their implications for microwave sintering of spherical ceria gels”, co-authored with François Valdivieso and Sébastien Vaucher.

Mauro Sozio, a researcher in the Computer Sciences and Networks Department of Télécom Paris, has won a Google Faculty Research Award for his work on the automatic detection of important events and emerging communities in social media.

Delphine Ménage, a PhD student in the Industrial Energy Department of Mines Douai, has won the Best Poster Prize in the 6th Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Energy and Materials Doctoral Day. Her poster titled “Study on devolatilizing pulverized coal in oxygen-enriched atmospheres under flame conditions” summarized her work carried out for a thesis jointly supervised by the École de Technologie Supérieure de Montréal (ETS).
Michel Crampes and Michel Plantié, researchers at the Computer Engineering and Production Engineering Laboratory of Mines Alès, have received the Best Article Prize in the Knowledge Engineering Conference (IC 2013) for their article titled “Partition and coverage of communities in bipartite, unipartite and directed graphs”.

Annelie Heuser, a PhD student in the Communications and Electronics Department of Télécom Paris run by Olivier Rioul and Sylvain Guilley, has been given the European Google Fellowship Award. Hers was one of just two French applications selected this year (with the ENS) and she was one of only two PhD students out of a dozen European winners.
Anna Pappa, a PhD student in the Computer Science and Networks Department of Télécom Paris run by Eleni Diamanti, has won the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. She is the only person in France to receive this scholarship, awarded each year to women who excel in computer science and technology.

Ahmad Assaf, a PhD student in the Multimedia Communications Department of Eurecom, has received a Best AI Mashup Award for his article co-authored with Aline Senart and Raphaël Troncy, titled “SNARC – A Semantic Social News Aggregator”, during the AI Mashup Challenge 2013 session in the 10th European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2013), Semantics and big data.

Neslihan Kose, a PhD student in the Multimedia Communications Department of Eurecom, has won the Best Student Paper Prize at the 10th IEEE Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition (FG 2013) for the article, “Countermeasure for the Protection of Face Recognition Systems Against Mask Attacks” co-authored with Jean-Luc Dugelay.

Sociologist Bruno Latour, a professor at Sciences-Po and honorary member of the Innovation Sociology Center (CSI) of Mines ParisTech, has won the international Holberg Prize.
The scientific article by Professor Daqing Zhang, titled “Ontology Based Context Modeling and Reasoning using OWL” published in 2004, has been distinguished by the Ten Years CoMoRea Impact Paper Award at the IEEE PerCom 2013. Daqing Zhang is Director of Studies in the Telecommunications Networks and Services Department of Télécom SudParis.

Ola Ahmad, a PhD student in the Biological Surfaces and Tissue Engineering Department of Mines Saint-Etienne, has won the Best Presentation Prize in the Annual International Conference on Computational Mathematics, Computational Geometry & Statistics (CMCGS 2013). Her thesis work, jointly supervised by Yann Gavet, Jean Geringer and Jean-Charles Pinoli, is on “Random and integral geometry of worn surfaces”.

Béatrice Pesquet-Popescu, a professor in the Signal and Image Processing Department of Télécom Paris, has been appointed an IEEE fellow.
Gérard Cohen, a professor in the Computer Science and Networks Department of Télécom Paris, has been appointed an IEEE Fellow.
Michal Szczerbak, a PhD student in the Networks, Security and Multimedia Department of Télécom Bretagne and at Orange Labs, has won the PhD Award Winning Paper prize in the 20th International Conference on conceptual structures (ICCS2013), for his publication titled “A model to compare and manipulate situations represented as semantically labeled graphs” co-authored with Ahmed Bouabdallah, François Toutain and Jean-Marie Bonnin.
David Gesbert, a professor in the Mobile Communications Department of Eurecom, has won the 2012 SPS Signal Processing Magazine Award for his article titled “Shifting the MIMO Paradigm”, co-authored with his counterparts at the University of Texas in Austin, Supelec and Huawei (Marios Kountouris, Robert W. Heath, Jr., Chan-Byoung Chae and Thomas Sälze).
